Debido a que cada niño es diferente, cada conjunto de hábitos de sueño también será diferente. Eso quiere decir que o durmió «muy bien» o «muy poco». Aunque cada niño nazca con su propia personalidad y necesidades los padres pueden hacer mucho para regular los ciclos de sueño de sus hijos, prestando atención a las señales visuales y a los comportamientos del bebé. 4 consejos básicos son:
- Keep your baby calm and quiet when feeding or changing him/her at night. Try not to stimulate him or wake him up too much.
- Play with the baby during the day. Talking and playing with your baby during the day will help extend the hours he or she is awake. This will help them sleep for longer periods during the night.
- Place your baby in bed when he or she is sleepy but still awake. This will help you learn to fall asleep on your own in your own bed. Holding or rocking him until he is completely asleep can make it hard to go back to sleep if he wakes up during the night.
- Wait a few minutes before responding to your child's complaints. Wait till you see if he can fall asleep by himself. If he continues to cry, see what happens to him, but don't turn on the light, don't play with him, and don't pick him up. If he gets desperate or can't calm down, consider what else might be bothering him. He may be hungry, wet or dirty, have a fever, or not feel well.
